Out West 1

Each year my friend Bob and myself go out on a camping and photographic tour of the United States. This is the first in a series of slideshows in which I will cover those tours. This slideshow covers the Palouse Falls State Park, Craters of the Moon National Monument and Dinosaur National Monument.

Palouse Falls State Park is a 105-acre camping park with a unique geology and history. The park offers a dramatic view of one of the state's most beautiful waterfalls. Palouse Falls drops from a height of 200 feet. It is just a short walk from the parking lot to the falls.

Craters of the Moon National Monument is located in the Snake River Plain in central Idaho. It runs along US 20 between the small cities of Arco and Carey, at an average elevation of 5900 feet above sea level. The protected areas features are volcanic and represent one of the best preserved flood basalt areas in the continental United States. Better bring some good tough shoes as the lava is very sharp and hard to walk on.

Fontenelle Reservoir is a artificial reservoir located in Southwest Wyoming. The Bureau of reclamation runs a campground that runs along Highway 189.  A number of the campsites are positioned near the water's edge
with picnic tables and fire rings.

Dinosaur national Monument is located on the border between Colorado and Utah. The main attraction is a cliff face, now enclosed within a large building, covered by hundreds of large fossilized dinosaur bones. Echo Park Campground is located inside the park and camping is at the bottom of the the Green River Canyon. It's a great place to camp but be warned there is a huge community of mosquitoes.
